Parksville BC has one of the best Vancouver Island dive sites and is well worth the visit. There is always lots to see!
In fact on my last visit there we saw a small pod of Orca's just as we were about to go into the water. There was 5 or 6 of them and they were very close to shore. Good thing we were running a few minutes late or they would have gone right over our heads.
Yes Madrona Point is definetly one of my favorite dive sites and in my opinion one of the best. There is lots of life there, and things to see and do. The nice thing about that site is there are really three, or even four sites at that one location, so there is lots of variety with depths and challenges to accomodate all levels of divers.
One other dive site is called Wall Beach and is a nice dive with decent shore entry, though not as interesting as the Madrona Pt. dive site. It is still an ok dive and has depths for all levels of divers.
(The Nanoose Bay dive sites will be covered on their own as technically they are in the Regional District of Nanaimo)
Especially exciting about these two sites is the strong possibility of some interaction with the local sea lions, as both these sites are located very close to a log dump where the sea lions have been hanging out for years. Meeting these five or six hundred pound giants can be a little intimidating to say the least, but we have yet to hear about any dangerous or aggressive behavior from these large mammals. Even so we suggest you keep your hands to yourself.
Did you know sea lions display aggression by going vertical in the water and blowing bubbles! sound familiar?
